  Description

Best Surprise Ever: Going out to add to your Christmas hoard and finding your fated mate.

  Laszlo

I’ve been longing to find my mate for over a thousand years. When I see him for the first time, he’s standing beneath sparkling glass ornaments, like a present waiting to be unwrapped. A present I intend to lay claim to.

If I can lure him back to my lair, I’ll shower him with so many gifts he’ll never want to leave. Bonded with my mate by Christmas? Yes, please.

  Roman

I’m no good at flirting and have terrible luck with men, so when a gorgeous alpha says he wants to take me home, I’m shocked. And wary. My heat is about to start, and I’ve never shared it with anyone, so why do I suddenly want to say yes to this stranger?

There’s something unusual about him, the way his eyes shine, the odd phrases he keeps using. He says he wants to add me to his collection of beautiful things. I should be offended, but instead, I’m intrigued. Just this once, should I take a risk?

How could a dragon not love Christmas? The world was filled with shiny, sparkly things. Silver and gold were everywhere, even in songs. And the humans were madly adding to their hoards. It was a dragon’s holiday if there ever was one. And I reveled in it. Having finally—with the help of my household staff—finished creating a sparkling snow-kissed wonderland in my front yard and covering my house with lights that would shine each night, displaying my abundance to the world, I decided it was time to do some shopping.

I’d seen the most wonderful glass decorations the last time I was in town—spheres of different sizes, some filled with glitter, others with it infused in the glass. They twisted and spun as they hung suspended above a Christmas village in a window display. The sun shining into the window made them sparkle even more. I would have bought them right then if I hadn’t been distracted by a pair of tasty omegas. I was ready for them now. They were exactly what I needed to complete the tree in my conservatory. I might just buy out the store.

I smiled as I walked down the street of the village that lay a few miles from my estate. I soaked up the energy of the people rushing by, moving more quickly than they did in other seasons. But many of them paused to gaze into the shop windows with excitement and wonder. Thoughts of adding to their hoards cheered them, and their joy magnified my own. I passed by a bookstore which had books stacked like a Christmas tree in the window. Next, I passed a bakery. The smell of fresh dough and icing wafted into the street. I was tempted, but I was determined to stay focused this time. Shiny first. Pastries later.

The shop I was looking for was on the next block. Tolliver’s Treasures. I vaguely remembered the windows being full of all sorts of kitschy gifts, but it hadn’t seemed nearly as interesting until it had been transformed into a Christmasy wonderland.

The door jangled as I pushed it open. A young man called out to welcome me, and I was suddenly transfixed, not by the beautiful glass I had come to acquire, but by the omega behind the counter. He made the two boys I’d devoured earlier that week seem like stainless steel next to the finest gold.

His golden hair shimmered in the light as magnificently as the glitter-filled ornaments. His eyes were bright blue, like jewels. His skin was smooth and beautiful, his body lean but not skinny. There was plenty of flesh for me to sink my teeth into. It was as if he’d been created just to tempt me. And he smelled absolutely delicious. His heat was coming on. Soon he’d be ready to beg for a thick cock inside him and a knot to fill him up.

Mine, my dragon insisted. Yes, he would be mine. The mere thought of him spending his heat with someone else made my dragon push to be released. The animal inside wanted to snatch up the omega and fly home with him held in his talons. But my dragon form was far too large for this little shop. My transformation would shatter all the lovely glass. I wondered if the omega had ever met a dragon. Not likely since my kind were rare. There weren’t many of us within easy distance of this village. He was in for a treat. If he’d never experienced the wonder that was my kind, he’d never truly been satisfied. I stifled a groan as I imagined taking him home and playing with him amongst all my shiny things.

“May I help you, sir?” The delightful omega interrupted my fantasies. I smiled at him, reminding my dragon he would have to behave for now. “Is there something you need?”

Even his voice was perfect, soft and sweet. This omega wasn’t a snack. He was a treasure I wanted to collect. I would add him to my hoard along with the sparkly things he sold.

“There is much you could help me with. But first, I’d like these.” I pointed to the glass ornaments that hung near the counter.

“How many of them, sir? And what color?”

I tried to focus on the glass orbs, but all I could think about was the omega. His scent was too intoxicating. “All of them.”

He frowned. “Sir, we have over fifty on display and many more in the back, but if you look on the shelf over there”—he pointed to a spot across from the display window—“you’ll see some boxed sets.”

I could easily buy them all. I could buy the entire store. But that would raise too many questions. As the centuries wore on, it became more complicated to exist in the human world. I liked this village, and I’d finally outfitted my lair exactly as I wanted it. I had no intention of leaving for a long time, so I needed to fit within the framework of human expectation when I was in public.

I breathed in deeply. The omega’s smell was even more exquisite the closer I came to him. I wondered if he’d taste as good as he smelled or even better. I barely stifled a groan at the thought. Yes, this omega would be mine. “Come with me so you can tell me all about them.”

He glanced around the store. There were a few other customers, but they all seemed to be happily browsing. “I can do that, sir, but I’m the only one here this afternoon, so if someone wants to check out…”

“I won’t take long.” I still wanted the shimmering ornaments, but I wanted him more. I was suddenly impatient to conclude my business in the store and get him home.

When we reached the shelf full of boxes of glass baubles, he said, “You can see all the different varieties we have here, sir. Ones with patterns in the glass, plain ones, and of course, many color options. There are more colors and varieties available for custom order from the artist, but I don’t think they would be ready in time for Christmas.”

“These will all do nicely.” I chos
e orbs with gold, silver, turquoise, and pale blue glitter, both plain and patterned. The omega seemed amazed that I would buy so many, and I couldn’t wait to wow him with my hoard. He would look lovely lying among my treasures or stretched out naked on the rug in front of my sparkling tree, hung with these gorgeous ornaments and draped with shimmering tinsel. Perhaps I would drape some tinsel around him before I laid him down and feasted upon him.

I’d acquired presents for my staff and the other dragons I considered friends. Such alliances were always uneasy as we were a competitive lot, but I’d formed a small group with a few of my kind. Kymar was the youngest of us at nine hundred ninety-eight years old, and none of us had yet found a mate. We called ourselves the Lonely Dragons Club thanks to Kymar who was the practical joker of the group and a bit undignified for a dragon. I’d protested, but the name had stuck. And in truth, I was lonely. My hoard was full of beautiful things, but none of them could return the affection I gave them. Today I was banishing that loneliness with a little retail therapy as the humans called it. And what better present could I get myself than this exquisite creature who smelled like warm cocoa on Christmas morning.

“Would you like me to wrap these up for you?” the lovely boy asked. “Are they gifts for someone?”

I’d like for him to wrap himself up. I had to shove my hands into my pockets as scales began to grow and talons threatened to emerge. The thought of unwrapping this omega was too potent for my dragon.

I cleared my throat, willing the animal side of me away. “No gift wrap necessary. Beautiful as it might be. They’re all for me. I have a tree waiting for them.”

He smiled. “I’m sure it will be beautiful.”

I preened at his complement. I could show him so many beautiful things. I could do so many beautiful things to him. “You’ll love it.”

His eyes widened. “I… Oh, yes I would love it. If I saw it. Which of course I won’t. Because it will be at your house.”

I stepped a little closer, loving how flustered he was. His pupils had widened, and I could sense the racing of his heart. He was aroused. That was partly because of his heat, but I didn’t think he’d be immune to me even without those biological urges. I was, after all, rather irresistible.

Mate. Take him home, my dragon insisted.

Mate? Could it be? Was that why he smelled so good and why I knew I had to have him.

Mine. I needed to hurry us along. “Shall I help you carry them to the counter?” I asked.

He blinked and looked up at me. “Oh, no. I can get them. I’m sorry. I got lost in thought.”

Hopefully, he’d been lost in thoughts of things I could do to him. Was he longing to return with me to my lair, to open himself for me?

I gathered some of the boxes anyway. There was no need to weigh him down with them when I could carry the entire shelf to the counter with ease, if he needed me to.

“I really can carry them for you, sir.”

My dragon practically purred over his willingness to serve. This omega was going to be so much fun to play with.

“I don’t mind. We wouldn’t want to risk any of them breaking.”

“Thank you, sir. They’re so beautiful. I would hate to drop one.”

They’re nowhere near as beautiful as you. I forced the words to stay in my head. Humans were skittish about praise like that. I could lavish him with it once I had him back at my lair.

“I’ll just close and secure the boxes if you don’t need them wrapped,” he said.

“Thank you.” I fought the urge to tell him to hurry. My need for him was growing by the moment, and my dragon was growing more insistent.

  Mate. My mate.

I wasn’t sure how much longer I could play the civilized human. My dragon side was urging me to grab the boy and my shinies and drag him back home with me. But that was not how things were done in this century. I had to be charming and convincing. I was good at that, but it was time-consuming, and I was impatient.

As I attempted to calm the beast inside me, I noticed a box of ornaments made of red glass with silver glitter suspended in it. “I will take those red ones too,” I said pointing to them. The beautiful omega reached out for the box. He added a lid and tied a ribbon around it. I stared at his long slender fingers as he worked and imagined how they would feel wrapped around my cock. He placed the box inside the carrier bag with the rest of my purchases.

  “Will that be all?”

  “Just one more thing.”

  “And what is that?”

  “You.”

  “Me?”

“Yes. You are as exquisitely beautiful as these items, and I am as eager to make you a part of my hoard.”

  “Your what?”

Damn it. I wasn’t supposed to say that. His alluring heat scent was making my dragon difficult to control. I needed to tone it down if I was going to succeed in getting him to leave with me. It had been so much easier back when we could simply take a man or woman from a village. But in these modern times, kidnapping led to dealings with the human authorities, and that could get messy. I had no taste for killing humans, at least not innocent ones.

I would have to work harder to convince this omega, who might be my mate, to come willingly. He would be worth it. Over the centuries, I’d been with many omegas during their heats, but I’d yet to feel such a strong urge to breed as I did with this man.

I took a deep breath, banishing my dragon and his old-fashioned thinking. “I would like you to accompany me and these lovely ornaments.”

The boy frowned. “Is this your very odd way of asking me out?”

Out? Like on a date? Dragons didn’t date. They claimed. I needed another tactic. “I want you to bring all of these lovely things to my home.”

“You mean you want me to deliver the ornaments?”

I could work with that idea. I’d ask him to be my delivery boy, and then once he was inside, I’d seduce him into never wanting to leave.

“Yes. I would like you to come with me and deliver these things to my house.”

He frowned. “I wouldn’t need to go with you. I have my own car, but I can’t leave now. The store won’t close for another”—he glanced at the clock—“hour and fifteen minutes.”

“Then you’ll close early.” I walked over to the door. It had one of those little clock signs with the red plastic hands that told when the store opened and closed. I spun the closed side so it read an hour earlier. “There. All fixed. Now you can accompany me and all my beautiful things.”

“Sir, I can’t do that. We often have lots of customers at the end of the day, and if I leave early, I could lose my job.”

I took a deep breath as I pondered my next move. His heat scent was intoxicating, and I wasn’t going to be able to restrain myself much longer.

I reached for my wallet, pulled out several hundred dollars, and laid them on the counter. “There. Will that compensate you for the time you’re missing?”

His eyes went wide. “You can’t be serious.”

I waved my hand. The money was nothing to me. If it made him eager to come with me, then all the better. He could have the rest of what was in my wallet for all I cared. I just needed to get him back to my lair, and I needed to do it soon. If I judged right by his scent—and it wasn’t like me to be wrong—his heat was coming on fast, probably faster than he realized.

“But what about the store? If people come by and it’s closed, they will complain, and I’ll still lose my job no matter how much money is in the till.”

“Call your boss and… say you’re ill.”

Or say you’ve been kidnapped by a dragon who isn’t going to want to let you go, so you won’t need the job anyway. Sadly, I could never say that to a modern omega. I could only hope that once he saw what I could provide for him, he’d never want to leave me.

He seemed to be pondering my suggestion. “Why are you in such a rush?”

Mate. Claim. I had to stay calm. “I’m anxious to get all my beautiful new
possessions home.”

“I really don’t think—” I leaned down, bringing my face close to his, letting the full force of my draconic charm unleash itself. “Would you really rather stay here than come with me?”

  He shivered, and his eyes darkened. “I shouldn’t… I don’t usually…”

“Of course you don’t. You’ve never met a man like me.” Not that I was a man per se.

  “I haven’t.”

The very thought of another of my kind thinking they could take him for their own made my dragon roar in protest.

  “Is something wrong?”

Act human. I shook my head, but when I exhaled, smoke came out.

“What was that?” he asked, glaring at me. “Are you smoking? You can’t smoke in here.”

“Certainly not. A filthy habit.” I wrinkled my nose as though thoroughly disgusted.

“It’s against the law here to smoke in a public building.”

  “I would never.”

“But I was sure I saw… Never mind. It’s been a long day. I guess I just imagined it.”

I wanted to soothe this sweet boy, tell him he wasn’t imagining things, that he was in the presence of a very powerful—and very sexy—dragon. But he’d find that out soon enough.

He rang up my purchases and handed over my credit card. When the transaction was complete, he glanced up at me.

“Come along. It’s time for you to join me.”

“Join you? I thought I was making a delivery.”

  “Yes, that’s what I meant. A delivery.”

He narrowed his eyes, studying me. “You want more than a delivery, don’t you?”
